Charging; cleaning. -Condensation of tarry products on the fuelfeeding valve of a gasproducer and the seating therefor is prevented by supplying in regulated quantities and without pressure water, graphite, grease, or other substance on to the engaging surfaces. In the construction shown, in which the fuel is fed by a rotary cylindrical pocketed valve 30 having a semi-cylindrical seat 12, one or more pipes 20 are arranged to deliver water between the valve and the upper edge of its seat. These pipes terminate outside the feeding-apparatus in cups, into which water is allowed to drip from valve-controlled pipes.
