Nitrogen.-In the continuous production of a mixture of nitrogen and carbon dioxide by passing combustion gases over a metal and its oxide, the composition of the catalyst is maintained by reducing a portion of the combustion gases before they pass into the contact chamber. In the anangement shown gas enters the combustion chamber 9 through the pipe 2 and tubes 7, and air under pressure is supplied through the aperture 3 and pipes 8 surrounding the gas tubes. The condition of the flame, observed through the spy-hole 39, indicates when adjustment of the gas supplies is necessary. An igniter 41 supplied independently with gas and air is also fitted. When a flap 12 is open some of the gaseous products pass into conduit 11, and after being reduced by the charcoal fed on to the grating 13 from the container 15, join the main gas stream leading to the column 20. The charcoal becomes heated and reacts with the water vapour present to give hydrogen and carbon monoxide, and with the carbonic acid to give carbon monoxide. The contact material may consist of sheet-copper spirals 23 packed in the frame 21 suspended from the cover 24 which acts as an explosion cap, being pressed against its seating by the spring 27 and cross-head 29. The combustion chamber is fitted with a similar explosion cap 32. As an increase in the supply of oxygen produces an approximately proportionate increase in the production of reducing gases, continual adjustment of the flap 12 is generally not necessary. To counteract extensive irregularities, the flap may be operated by an electrical device controlled by a continuously operating gas-analyzer, samples of gas being taken from different points in the apparatus. Instead of gas firing, the process may be carried out with any firing installations and the combustion gases may be reduced by any other substance such as benzol, petroleum, or oxalic acid instead of charcoal.
