Abstract

Protective arrangements.-In a power distribution system a spare cable is laid additional to the supply cables and of the same capacity as each of them, the space cable serving while the system is sound as a pilot wire in a Merz-Price type of protective system, and on fault to earth as a substitute cable which by means of switch devices replaces the faulty cable which in turn serves as the pilot wire. In the three-phase arrangement shown, employing lead-sheathed cables, the main cables 1, 2, 3 are provided with isolating switches 12 and change-over switches 13 which enable the spare cable 4 by means of its switch 13 to be substituted for any of the main cables and the faultv cable isolated. Current transformers 5 are arranged at each end of the system and connected as shown. To ensure that only faults within the section protected will operate the switches, the transformer group at one end is connected to that at the other through relays 9 by means of the spare cable, the return circuit being through earth. In the case of feeders where it is possible for faults to occur between phases, two additional transformers are arranged at each end with their secondaries connected in series and with the secondary systems of the earth fault protection transformers. The improvements are applicable also to single-phase and two-phase systems.
