Abstract
172,548. Platt, W. H. H. Jan. 22, 1921. Drawings to Specification. Soldering.-Relates to repairing sheets and castings of aluminium and its alloys and to the attachment of copper, brass, steel, and other metals to aluminium, and consists of tinning, sweating, and burning processes. An alloy which fs used in the tinning or sweating process consists of approximately 2 parts of tin, 1 part of zinc, and i part of aluminium, which are melted together and run into thin strips. The casting to betreated is cleaned in any ordinary way, and then rubbed with a file or scraper, and then heated in a blow-lamp and a strip of the alloy, without a flux, melted on to the part to be repaired, and worked by a scraper &c. into the crack or hole to be filled. The lamp is then withdrawn and the plastic alloy can be worked into any desired configuration. To attach a brass or copper article to a part of aluminium, the article is first tinned with block tin, using killed spirits, or sal-ammoniac, and washed in hot water to remove all traces of acid. It is then tinned with alloy and allowed to cool. The aluminium casting is then tinned with the same alloy and when both parts are cool they are placed together and a sweated joint made between them. To attach a steel tube to an aluminium casting, the part of the tubeto be jointed is filed or cleaned with emery cloth or hydrochloric acid. This part is then tinned with block tin as described above, and when clean retinned with the alloy and the aluminium cast on to it.
