Abstract

Air, supplying; grates.-Hot air from the closed chamber e below the grate is supplied to the front of the grate to ignite the fresh fuel, through the perforated top g of a small upper chamber in communication with the chamber e through a valve-controlled opening f. The air supply to the chamber e is consituted by air escaping from the hollow air-cooled fire-bars of the step grate, the amount of air so escaping being in part under control by means of valve-controlled outlets h in the undersides of the fire-bars. more especially the lower bars where less combustion air is needed.
