Abstract
170,433. White & Co., Ltd., J. S., Forster, A., and Mellor, G. A. Aug. 5, 1920. Cylinders receiving liquid fuel.-In Diesel or semi-Diesel engines in which the piston controls exhaust scavenging and charging air ports, these ports are all in one plane, which is normal to the cylinder axis. The piston has a groove F<3> to correspond to the charging air port H; on its upward stroke the exhaust and scavenging air ports are closed before the charging air port is closed. The scavenging-air is compressed in the crank case and delivered through the transfer passage J<2> to ports which may be on either side of the port H. The charging air is supplied by a pump and its delivery is controlled by a cylindrical or other valve L. The fuel spraying nozzle E is arranged to deliver the fuel into the combustion chamber D, the groove in the piston forming the channel through which the spray passes. The nozzle is of the kind described in Specification 169,587, and may be used to admit starting air and act as a relief valve. The combustion chamber may be connected to the cylinder by a narrow neck, or the fuel nozzle may be mounted in the combustion head. The whole of the combustion chamber may be water-jacketed.
