Abstract

169,737. Fowler, W. April 7, 1920. Four - stroke-cycle engines; driving- gear; cylinders, cooling and construction of.-Two pairs of stationary or revolving cylinders are arranged coaxially in a common plane and on opposite sides of a central driving-shaft, the pistons being connected together by rods 41, 42 to move in unison. The engine shown in Fig. 1 has rotating cylinders mounted upon central casings containing cam-actuated inlet and exhaust valves and secured to a central shaft 11 located inside stationary shafts 10, 12. Longitudinal bolts 21 secure the cylinders to one another and to the valve casings. Combustible mixture is conveyed to combustion spaces adjacent the central shaft through the passage 13 and ports 31. Burnt gases exhausting through passages 35 impinge upon the blades of a radialflow turbine 51, one portion of which is secured to the fixed central shaft 10 and the other portion to the rotating cylinders. An exhausting- fan may replace the turbine. Helical cooling- fins are provided on the cylinders. The pistons are connected by rods 40 to a slotted frame 38 which embraces a ring 37 mounted on rollers 36 carried by an eccentric member secured to the shaft 10.
