Abstract

168,692. Spangler, H. E. June 14, 1920. Compressing air for purposes -other than propulsion. - In a spring suspension for vehicles of the kind comprising a spring associated with piston and cylinder devices which pump air into a reservoir upon relative movement between the ground wheels and the supported body, the reservoir may form a supply of compressed air for cooling the motors or inflating the tyres. According to the invention, the suspension comprises an horizontal cylinder 10 provided with inlet and outlet valves 28, 28<1> and a pair of pistons 25 and piston-rods 23 connected by pins 20 to the slotted arms 18 of bell-crank levers 14, which are fulcrumed on arms 12 carried by the cylinders. A spring 26 is arranged between the pistons 25 and elastic buffers 27 are interposed between the pistons and the ends of the cylinder. The cylinders 10 are secured to the axles 5 and the levers 14 are connected to the chassis 3. Air passes from the pumps through connections 29 to a reservoir 30 from which it may be passed to the motor or tyres.
