Abstract
168,644. Cooper, S. June 2, 1920. Lathing.-In lathing of the kind formed of slats of wood stuck to a backing of cardboard, webbing, &c., the slats 11 are formed with bevelled side edges, and the narrower faces are in contact with the backing 10 so that dove - tail grooves are formed to key the added plaster into position. A machine for making the lathing comprises two portions, one of which causes the feeding of the web or backing against adhesive - applying roller and the other comprises means for feeding the slats and pressing them on to the web. The web 10 is caused to pass over rollers 14, 15, 16, 17 against a positively rotated adhesive-applying roller 18 and then between adjustable pinch-rolls 19, 20 which control the amount of adhesive, the lower roll 19 being positively driven. The web then passes between the co-operating press rolls 21, 22 which operate to apply the slats to the web. The roll 16 is driven from the main driving-shaft 23, and this roll drives the rolls 15 and 19 through gearing, the adhesive applying roll being driven intermediately between the rolls 16 and 19. The pressure roll 22 is resiliently mounted in the machine framing and is provided with removable sets of projections 56, Fig. 3, on which the wooden slats are pressed by a roller 58 as they are fed from a belt conveyor 41, and carried round until they are pressed on to the web, a weighted retaining-belt 67, Fig. 2, aiding to keep them on the drum. A resiliently mounted stripping-device or devices 42 enter grooves 77 in the roll at the position where the web leaves the pressing-rolls. The slats are moved across the bridge piece 55 disposed between the conveyer and the pressure roll 22 by fingers 44 carried in radial slots in discs 48 disposed at the end of a shaft 79 which is rotated by gearing from the lower conveyer spindle 82. Rollers 53 on these fingers coact with fixed cams 50, 51, 52 to project and retract the fingers, the cam 51 being resiliently mounted so that undue pressure on the fingers in this position will not cause damage to them. The spacing of the slats from the conveyer to the pressure roller may be varied by adjusting the position of the shaft 79 carrying the finger discs relatively to the fixed cams; for this purpose the shaft 79 is mounted in screw adjusted bearings 80 in links 90 pivoted at 91 to the shaft of the upper pressure roller, a link 78 maintaining the meshing of the driving gears 86, 87 for any adjusted position. Saws 78 are provided to trim the edges of the product as it leaves the machine.
