Abstract
164,062. B÷cker, F., and Eichhoff, A. Dec. 30, 1919. Electrodes; amalgamating. -A cell comprises a positive electrode and an amalgamated negative electrode containing from 3 to 40 per cent of mercury, in an alkaline electrolyte thickened with flour &c. The negative electrode may be of zinc and the amalgamation is effected by first heating the zinc to 150‹-200‹ C. and applying mercurv while the electrode is still warm or after it has cooled. After amalgamation the electrode may again be heated to 100‹ C. The electrode may be in the form of a cylinder, the interior being amalgamated by pouring mercury into it; if the exterior is to be amalgamated mercury is brought into contact with the external surface. An electrode may also be made by cutting the metal into pieces and then adding mercury or an amalgam and moulding the mixture under pressure; or the metal may be amalgamated before being cut. The Figure shows an electrode consisting of two amalgamated cylinders, the inner one being provided with perforations c and indentations b which may be filled with amalgam. The two cylinders may be in contact or an annular space may be left between them which may be filled with amalgam.
