Abstract

163,938. Geering, H. July 26, 1920. Vacuum closures.-A closure for glasses for preserved fruits &c. comprises a lid 4, Fig. 1, which has a tapered depression 5 having a small orifice 6 in its cup-shaped bottom, and a softrubber stopper 7 fitting into the depression and having a narrow central slot 8 normally kept closed by atmospheric pressure. The stopper may be made in halves which form the slot between them. To open the vessel, an opener 9, Fig. 4, is inserted in the slot to allow air to enter the vessel through a passage 10 in the opener so that the lid may be removed easily. In a modification, a flat pin 17, Fig. 5, inserted permanently in the slot 15 is twisted to open the slot to allow air to enter the vessel. A label is stuck over the top of the depression in the lid.
