Abstract

Hunting-switches.-In order to prevent hunting in a reversible relay or following mechanism, the normal time of reversal is advanced by introducing a mechanical or electrical connection between the primary and secondary elements of the relay, the amount of the advance being proportional to or a function of the speed of the relay mechanism. The controlling-member 1 of a following mechanism such as is used in gyroscopic compasses carries a wheel 3 co-operating with electrical contact members 26, 27 carried by the following member 6 to control a relay electric motor. The motor is mounted on the follower 6 and drives it by means of a pinion 7 engaging a fixed rack 9. A viscous or eddy current brake or other suitable coupling 22, Fig. 3, on the spindle 10 of the motor causes a turning effort upon a pinion 25 proportional to the speed of the motor, which is utilized to displace a toothed segment 20, by springs 14, 15, pivoted on the follower and normally centred. The segment 20 carries the contact members 26, 27. This displacement causes the switching action to take place in advance of the moment at which the secondary element overtakes the primary and thus annuls hunting.
