Adjusting for position.-In a sugar-cane mill having an upper roll superimposed upon a lower roll and carried in a separate housing, means is provided for adjusting the relative position of the upper roll with its housing in a plane substantially normal to that containing the axes of the rolls, the direction of adjustment in that plane being at right-angles to the axes of the rolls. The housings C, D carrying the bearing-blocks A<2>, A<3>, B<2>, B<3> of the shafts A<1>, B<1> of the upper and lower rolls A, B abut each other in a plane substantially normal to that containing the axes of the rolls, and the upper housing C is adjustable in this plane across the face of the lower housing D by means of setscrews E carried in lugs F on opposite sides of the lower housing D and bearing on metal packing- pieces H inserted between the inner faces of the lugs F and adjacent faces G on the lower part of the upper housing C. The upper bearing-block B<2> of the lower roll B is provided at both ends with an upstanding ledge B<4> which abuts and acts as a guide-surface for the adjacent end face of the upper housing. The upper housing is held down by king-bolts and nuts J<1>, clearances K in the lower housing allowing of lateral movement. The bolts J project beyond the nuts J<1> through apertures in a press-head L and yoke M, and are there secured by nuts J<2>. The press-head L bears upon the upper surface of the bearing-block A<2>, and springs N are placed between the head L and yoke M. A wedge A<4> is provided for positioning the lower bearing-block A<3> of the upper roll. The invention is applicable to mills having more than two rolls.
