161,666. Spence, W. L. Jan. 12, 1920. Exhaust - silencers. - A silencer comprises an exhaust pipe P surrounded by a detachable spherical expansion box X in halves held together and secured to the pipe by a bolt B. The pipe within the box is flattened or constricted at D. D<1> and perforated at H, H<1> for the admission and outlet of the gases. The halves of the box may be held together by a spring S, which yields in case of an explosion in the silencer and allows escape holes :.n the two halves to come into register. The spring may be replaced by a distance tube, and the box X may be divided vertically to allow the escape of condensation products.
