Gear-wheels, grinding and trueing teeth of.- In order that the operative surface A of the grinding-disc S may wear uniformly and thereby automatically retain its shape, this surface, which is narrower than the operative part of the tooth profile E, has, in addition to the movement in known manner along the line of contact of the tooth, a movement at right-angles to that line; the relative motion between the disc and the gear-wheel is thus parallel to a line L, making an angle with the line L. Two or more grinding-discs may be employed, moving as described and operating simultaneously on opposite sides of the same tooth, or on opposite or corresponding sides of different teeth. The grinding-surface of the disc may be plane or cylindrical, and the movement at right-angles to the line of contact may comprise a series of rapid reciprocations.
