Abstract

160,117. Aublant, J. July 19, 1920. Variable-speed ratchet gearing comprises a crank-pin 11, the throw of which is varied automatically by a governor directly driven by the motor. A gear 7 driven from the motor by a pinion M is secured to a disc 5 across which the pin 11 slides. For this purpose, the pin is carried by a slide 9 having an arm 10 engaged by a radial screw 22. A bevel pinion 21 on the end of the screw 22 meshes with gears 19, 20 loose upon a fixed shaft 1. The governor 29 is driven through chain gearing 53 from the gear 7. A lever 28 connects the governor to a rod 16, which slides within the shaft 1 and carries a lug 27 projecting between the gears 19, 20. Centrifugal action and the tension of a spring 30 opposing one another cause the rod 16 to slide so as to bring the lug 27 into engagement with clutch dogs 25 on the gear 19, or with like dogs 26 on the gear 20. The effect of such engagement is to stop the gear, so that as the disc 5 turns, the screw 22 is operated, and the slide 9 and pin 11 are traversed across the disc. Provision is made for disengaging the lug 27 when the slide 9 reaches its extreme positions. The end of the rod 16 projects into a slot 14 in the slide 9, and the ends of this slot have inclines 17, 18 adapted to strike and operate the rod. Power passes from the pin 11 through a connecting-rod 35 to a double rack 33, 34, Fig. 4, engaging toothed pinions 37, 38, Fig. 3, ratchet-mounted on a countershaft 36. A gear 39, which may drive the differential gear of a motor-vehicle, is driven forwardly or reversely through planet-gears 42 supported in a loose spider 60 and meshing with gears 41, 44 secured to the elements 39, 36, respectively. A sliding bar 46 operates a clutch 57 for forward driving and dogs 47 to arrest the spider 60 for reversal of motion.
