Abstract

160,110. Skelly, J. S. June 26, 1920. Stoking; air supply, regulating; grates. - An underfeed stoker comprises a retort to which fuel is fed by a plunger, together with two overfeed sections between the retort and the rear of the furnace, one of which receives the fuel from the retort and discharges it on to the other. In the stoker shown, fuel is fed by the plunger 14 to a retort 5, from the top of which it is discharged to an over-feed section formed of moving bars 7 alternating with stationary bars. A second over-feed section is formed of similar alternate moving bars 9; beyond this is a dumping-grate 11. The bars are reciprocated by rocker bars 24, 37 having arms 69, 71, to which are adjustably connected links 64, 70 operated from the mechanism that drives the plunger 14. By altering the points of connection of the links to the arms 69, 71, the rates of feed of fuel over each grate section may be adjusted so as to secure a correct distribution of the fuel. Air is supplied to a chamber 29 beneath the front grate section, thence through passages 34 in the bars to a chamber 32, whence it passes between the bars to the fire. Similar means deliver an independently-controlled air supply to the rear grate section. The forward ends of the bars in the front grate section are provided with openings through which air is delivered to the fuel issuing from the retort. To adapt the stoker to furnaces of varying sizes, the retort 5 and dumping-grate 11 are each made in sections, a number of which are used to make up the required width; whilst the use of fire-bars of appropriate length in the rear grate section in conjunction with fire-bars of standard length in the front section enables the total length of the stoker to be varied.
