Description

(54) BAG HOLDER (71) We, SURREY STEEL COMPONENTS LIMITED, a British Company, of Trinity Road, Richmond, Surrey, and SOLOMON OHAYON, a British Subject, of 18, Barn Rise, Wembley Park, Middlesex, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:- This invention relates to holders for bags.
According to the present invention there is provided a holder for a bag, comprising a mouth to receive an open end of a bag, an elastic loop capable of encircling at least part of the outer periphery of the mouth and a member engaged on and slidable along the elastic loop to facilitate stretching of the elastic loop over an open end of the bag encircling the outer periphery of the mouth to trap the open' end of the bag between the loop and the outer periphery of the mouth.
The elastic loop may be a closed loop, in which case it may be fixed relative to the mouth at one point.
Alternatively the elastic loop may be open, in which case the elastic loop may be fixed, at its free ends, relative to the mouth.
The mouth may have indented slots spaced around its periphery so that a respective part of the elastic loop can lie in each slot when the elastic loop is stretched around the open end of the bag.
The holder may be provided with a lid for closing the mouth.
The mouth may be constituted by a rigid loop. Alternatively it may be constituted an open end of an open-ended container.
In the case where the mouth is constituted by a rigid loop, the rigid loop may be provided with means for mounting the holder on a wall bracket.
Alternatively the holder may further comprise a support for spacing the rigid loop from the ground. The rigid loop may be releasably mountable on the support.
The support may have a pointed end for insertion in soil.
The member may comprise a ring encircling the elastic loop and a handle mounted on the ring.
Specific embodiments will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a front perspective view from above and one side of a holder; Figure 2 is a rear perspective view of the holder of Figure 1 from below and the other side; Figure 3 is a front view of the holder of Figure 1 mounted on a stake; and Figure 4 is a side view of the holder of Figure 1 mounted on a wall bracket with a bag mounted on the holder.
The drawings show a holder, generally indicated at 10, comprising a mouth 11 constituted by a generally rectangular rigid metal loop 12, an open elastic loop 13 for encircling the outer periphery of the loop 12, a slide 14 slidably mounted on the elastic loop 13, a lid 15 pivotably mounted on the mouth 11, a right angle flange 16, the end of one arm 17 of which is attached to the mouth adjacent the pivotal support of the lid 15 to space the other arm 18 horizontally from the loop 12 such that it extends downwardly with respect to the loop 12.
The loop 12 is formed with two spaced outwardly extending flanges 19 which project from a long side 19 the loop 12 on either side of the arm 17. A shaft 20 extends between the upper ends of the flanges 19 and through the side walls of an extension 21 formed on the lid 15 to pivotably mount the lid 15 on the loop 12.
The flanges 19 are formed with a pair of aligned slots 22, each having an enlarged closed end 23 into which a respective end of the elastic loop 13 is jammed. Each of the free ends of the elastic loop have a circlip 24 encircling it so as to prevent the respective end being pulled through the slot 18. The slide 14 consists of two rings 25 and 26 in a twisted figure of eight configuration, the rings 25 and 26 lying in orthogonal planes.
Ring 25 encircles the elastic loop 13, whilst being sidlable thereon, and ring 26 forms a handle by means of which the ring 25 can be slid along the elastic loop 13.
The metal loop 12 is formed with a horizontally extending indented channel 12a at each of the corners. Slots 1 2a perform the dual purpose of stiffening the metal loop 12 and of locating the elastic loop 13, when it extends around the metal loop 12.
The arm 18 of the flange 16 is slightly tapered so that it can be inserted either in a wall bracket 27, as shown in Figure 4 or in a similar bracket 28, which is welded on the upper end of a stake 28, as shown in Figure 3.
The stake 28 can be inserted in soil for outdoor use.
In use the elastic loop 13 is initially pulled outwardly and upwardly by means of the slide 14 until it no longer encircles the loop 12. The closed end of a bag 29 (see Figure 4) is passed through the loop 12 and the open end of the bag is folded over the loop 12, as shown in Figure 3. The slide 14 is then slid along the elastic loop 13 from one end of the loop 13 to the other, in such a way that the ring 25 of the slide 14 is maintained adjacent the folded portion of the bag 29 and follows a path, which lies between the top of the loop 12 and the periphery of the open end of the bag 29.
As the slide 14 is slid past the first two corners of the loop 12 and along its front it guides the elastic loop 13 to lie against the bag and to extend along the path followed by the ring 25. As the ring 25 approaches the third corner the elastic loop 13 becomes under tension and the continued sliding of the ring 25 causes the loop to be snapped over first the third corner and then the fourth corner of both the open end ofthe bag 29 and the mouth 11 to trap the open end of the bag 29 against the outer periphery of the loop 12.
At each corner the loop 13 is located in a respective slot 12a.
The bag can then be used for collecting refuse or for any other storage purpose. The lid 15 can be closed to keep the smells of the refuse in and flies and other insects out.
When a bag is full the user centres the slide 14 at the front of the mouth 11 and then pulls it upwardly and outwardly by means of the ring 26 to free the bag 29.
It will be appreciated that each holder 10 can be easily removed from its support bracket or support stake when not in use.
Alternatively the holder can be permanently fixed to its support.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS: 1. A holder for a bag comprising a mouth to ,receive an open end of the bag, an elastic loop capable of encircling at least part of the outer periphery of the mouth and a member engaged on and slidable along the elastic loop to facilitate stretching of the elastic loop over an open end of the bag encircling the outer periphery ofthe mouth to trap the open end of the bag between the loop and the outer periphery of the mouth.

**WARNING** start of CLMS field may overlap end of DESC **. horizontally extending indented channel 12a at each of the corners.
