Description
(54) CUTTING AND/OR BEVELLING PLASTICS TUBES
(71) We, WAVIN B.V., a Dutch Corporate Body, of 251 Handellaan, 8031 EM Zwolle,
The Netherlands, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:
The present invention relates to cutting and/ or bevelling plastics tubes.
The invention, the scope of which is defined in the appended claims, includes a method of cutting and/or bevelling a plastics tube comprising the steps of impressing a region of the tube wall by application of at least one roller thereto, the impressed region being adjacent a point of contact of a cutting and/or bevelling device, and cutting and/or bevelling the tube by rotating the cutting and/or bevelling device and the or each roller about the tube.
The invention also includes apparatus for cutting and/or bevelling a plastics tube comprising a frame for fixing the apparatus relative to a tube; a cutting and/or bevelling device; at least one roller for impressing the tube wall adjacent a point of contact of the cutting and/or bevelling device; and means for rotating the cutting ánd/or bevelling device and the or each roller about the tube to cut and/or bevel said tube.
In order that the invention may be well understood an embodiment thereof will now be described by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through an apparatus for cutting and/or bevelling a plastics tube with such a tube shown in position for cutting and/or bevelling;
Figure 2 is a schematic cross section through a plastics tube within the apparatus showing its deformation;
Figure 3 is a detail of the apparatus of
Figure 1 with some modifications; and
Figure 4 shows partial cross sections of chisels suitable for use in the apparatus.
Plastics tubes frequently require to be cut from longer lengths and if the cut end is to be fitted into a socket in which a sealing device may be accommodated, it is desirable that it should be bevelled to aid insertion.
The illustrated apparatus comprises a frame 1 provided with tube fixing clamps 2 and 3 for holding a plastics tube 17. A ring 4 is connected by supports 14 to the frame 1 so that the ring 4 is rotatable around its own axis.
Fastened to the ring 4 is a roller carrier 5 which by means of shaft 19 (Figure 3) carries the freely rotatable rollers 6 and 7. Tube supports comprising other roller carriers (not shown) similar to 5 each carrying a pair of rollers 8, 9 or 10, 11 (Figure 2) may be spaced equally around the ring 4, the pairs of rollers 6, 7; 8, 9; and 10, 11 supporting and compressing the tube wall at equally spaced regions around its periphery.
A cutting and/or bevelling device comprises a chisel holder which is connected to one of the roller carriers 5. The chisel holder may be fixed relative to the roller carrier or be radially movable relative thereto by means of a chisel holder guide device 20 which can move a chisel 13 in the holder in the radial direction until the chisel 13 comes into contact with a plastics tube 17 fitted into the apparatus for bevelling and/or cutting.
A roller guide 21 is fitted to each carrier 5 to move rollers 6 and 7, or 8 and 9, or 10 and 11 in the radial direction to apply controlled pressure to the plastics tube at regions 17a, 17b and 17c respectively on the outer periphery of the tube 17.
The ring 4 can be rotated by a motor 15 fastened to the frame 1. The motor 15 drives the ring 4 by means of a pulley 16.
As a result of the pressure applied by the three sets of rollers 6, 7; 8, 9;and 10,11 the plastics tube 17 is deformed as shown in Figure 2. This is accompanied by close contact between the regions 17a, 17b and 17c of the tube wall and the rollers. Thus when the ring 4 rotates, that region 1 7a of the tube 17 which comes into contact with the chisel or cutting device 13 has already been impressed inwards, and is not deformed further when subjected to the action of the cutting device. As the cutting device is positioned at a fixed distance from the rollers during use, a perfect bevel or perfect cut of the plastics tube is obtained. There are therefore no irregularities or corrigations which may result because of variations in the depth of the cut when the tube is not subject to radial compression before cutting. For cutting off lengths of plastics tube use can be made of a ripping chisel 13, and for bevelling use can be made of a right-handed bevelling chisel 13a, a left-handed bevelling chisel 13b, or a doublesided bevelling chisel 13c, as illustrated in
Figure 4.
To ensure correct location of the sets of rollers in the radial direction, each carrier 5 of the apparatus is provided with a roller guide 21, and additionally guide grooves formed by the discs 22, 23 as shown in Figure 3 may be provided to ensure good guidance of the roller carrier 5, whereby at the same time the cutting device 13 can be accurately positioned with respect to the rollers.
In order to bevel and/or cut off a length of plastics tube 17, the tube 17 is clamped into the apparatus by means of fixing clamps 2 and 3. The roller carriers 5 are then radially positioned as shown in Figure 2 by means of their respective roller guides 21 so that the rollers 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 apply pressure to or impress the tube wall in regions 17a, 17b and 17c. The position of chisel 13 may be adjusted by means of chisel holder guide device 20, if present, such that the chisel 13 is in contact with the plastics tube wall. The motor 15 then causes ring 4 to rotate about the tube 17 thus carrying the chisel 13 about the periphery of the tube 17 together with the rollers to produce a uniform bevel and/or cut around the tube 17.
