Description

(54) IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO A BLANK FOR MAKING A BOX AND TO A BOX MADE FROM THE BLANK (71) We, CAIRWAY LIMITED, a British Company, of No. 1, Roberts Street, Grimsby, South Humberside, formerly of Chariot Works, Estate Road No. 8, South Humberside Industrial Estate, Grimsby, Lincolnshire, and CORRUPLAST LIMITED, a British Company, of 1F14, London Road, Gloucester GLI 3NE, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: The invention relates to a blank for making a box and to a box made from the blank.
According to one aspect of the invention there is provided a blank for making a box, the blank comprising a bottom panel, a pair of opposite first wall panels hinged to the bottom panel along first hinge lines (as herein defined), a pair of opposite second wall panels hinged to the bottom panel along second hinge lines (as herein defined), one pair of lateral flaps at each of two opposite sides of the blank each flap being on a wall panel, the flaps being joined to their respective wall panels along third hinge lines (as herein defined), the third hinge lines being co-linear with respective first or second hinge lines, at least one and no more than three of the panels and flaps, at each corner of the bottom panel, having a curved cut-out, and each lateral flap being separated from an immediately adjacent wall panel by a slot which leads from a respective corner of the bottom panel to the edge of the blank.
Thus using the invention it is possible to assemble a box which has a drainage aperture formed by the indentations at each corner of the base of the box.
The lateral flaps may be on each wall panel of the second pair of wall panels each lateral flap then being separated by the slot from an adjacent one of the pair of opposite first wall panels.
The curved cut-outs may be only in the bottom panel and in the adjacent first wall panel and second wall panel at each corner.
Alternatively the curved cut-outs may be in only the respective adjacent first wall panel, flap and second wall panel at each corner.
Again, the curved cut-outs may be in only the bottom panel and adjacent second wall panel at each corner.
Further, the curved cut-outs may be only in the bottom panel and adjacent first wall panel at each corner.
According to a second aspect of the invention there is provided a box assembled from a blank as hereinbefore defined by hinging the first and second pair of wall panels about their respective hinge lines (as herein defined) so that they extend at substantially 90 to the plane of the bottom panel and in which the flaps are hinged about their respective third hinge lines (as herein defined) to lie contiguous with the adjacent wall panel and secured to it by securing means.
It is possible using the invention to provide a box suitable for the packaging and transport of fish (or other goods) packed in ice so that water may drain during transport and storage of the boxes.
It will be understood that the expression "hinge line" used herein is defined to mean any line of weakness, line, crease, or other linear impression or linear series of impressions in or on the material of the blank so that the various wall panels and flaps can be hinged transversely of the plane of the bottom panel without destruction of the blank.
Constructions embodying the invention are hereinafter described, by way of example, with reference to the drawings filed with the Provisional Specification, in which: Figure I shows a plan view of a blank for making a fish box; and Figure 2 shows on the enlarged scale a cross-section of part of a synthetic resin board from which the blank of Figure 1 is made.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown a blank 1 for making a fish box made of synthetic resin board 2 (see Figure 2) in the form of top and bottom surfaces 3 and 4 joined by internal walls 5 which define channels 6 throughout the length of the board 2. Such a board 2 is one sold under the name "Correx" (Registered Trade Mark).
The board 2 is made in a one shot extrusion process so that the channels 5 contain only air. It is strong, resilient, water resistant and light. The resin may be polypropylene, polyethylene or any co-polymers thereof.
The blank 1 (Figure 1) has a bottom panel 7, and a first pair of opposite wall panels 8 connected to the bottom panel 7 by first hinge lines 9. A second pair of opposite wall panels 10 are hinged to the bottom panel 7 by second hinge lines 11. Each wall panel 10 of the second pair of wall panels has a flap 12 connected to it by third hinge lines 13.
The blank 1 has curved cut-outs 14 at each corner of the bottom panel 7 in no more than three of the bottom panel 7, wall panels 8 and 10 and flaps 12. Four different configurations of holes, A, B, C, D formed by the curved cut-outs 14 are shown on Figure 1 in order to show various ways in which a drainage aperture at a corner of a box assembled from the blank I can be formed. It will be understood though that usually only one particular selected configuration of aperture would be formed at the four corners of the panel. This simplifies manufacture. The configuration A consists of a curved cut-out 14 in each of the bottom panel 7, and adjacent first and second wall panels 8 and 10 at that corner. The curved cut-outs do not extend into the adjacent flap 12.
The configuration B consists of curved cutouts 14 in each of the adjacent flap 12 and first and second wall panels 8 and 10. The curved cut-outs do not extend into the bottom panel 7.
The configuration C consists of curved cutout 14 in the bottom panel 7 and in the adjacent second wall panel 10 so that a circular aperture is formed in plan. The curved cut-outs 14 do not extend into the adjacent flap 12 and first wall panel 8.
The configuration D consists of curved cut-outs 14 in the bottom panel 7 and in the adjacent first wall panel X so that a circular aperture, in plan, is again provided. The curved cut-outs 14 do not extend into the adjacent second wall panel 10 and flap 12.
A slot 15 narrower than the aperture at a corner extends effectively from that corner of the bottom panel 7 to the edge of the blank I and separates a flap 12 from the adjacent first wall panel 8.
To assemble a box from the blank, the first wall panels 8 are first hinged up to a position generally 90 from the plane of the bottom panel about the first hinge lines 9. The second wall panels 10 are then likewise hinged up from the plane of the bottom panel about the second hinge lines 11. The lateral flaps 12 are then folded about the third hinge lines 13 to be alongside the respective adjacent first wall panel 8. In this position the flaps 12 and first wall panels 8 are secured together by securing means such as staples, stitching, adhesive or welding e.g.
high frequency welding of the plastics of the board so that the walls are rigidly held together and a stable box is formed. The apertures are formed by the curved cut-outs and are at the corners of the bottom panel 7 and permit drainage from the box.
The corners of the blank, including at the entry to each of the slots 15 are rounded in the embodiment shown to facilitate handling.
It will be understood that the invention may take other forms than that shown in the drawings and above described. Thus, another configuration of aperture, not shown, would be a curved cut-out in the bottom panel alone. Alternatively, there may be only one curved cut-out at each corner, viz. in the bottom panel 7, or one of the first and second panels 8 and 10 or flap 12. Again, another configuration of aperture comprises a curved cut-out in the bottom panel 7 and in the adjacent flap 12. Also, the walls 5 of the board 2 from which the blank is made may not be straight but may be bowed, e.g. to the right as viewed in Figure 2. It will also be understood that the curved cut-outs may be formed by punching in a suitable die punch machine, by cutting, or by any other suitable method.
Instead of synthetic plastics material it will be understood that other sheet material, e.g.
cardboard, may be used provided it is foldable about a hinge line, as defined herein.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS:- I. A blank for making a box, the blank comprising a bottom panel, a pair of opposite first wall panels hinged to the bottom panel along first hinge lines (as herein defined), a pair of opposite second wall panels hinged to the bottom panel along second hinge lines (as herein defined), one pair of lateral flaps at each of two opposite sides of the blank each flap being on a wall panel, the flaps being joined to their respective wall panels along third hinge lines (as herein defined), the third hinge lines being co-linear with respective first or second hinge lines, at least one and no more than three of the panels and flaps, at
