Abstract

159,028. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., (General Electric Co.). Nov. 24, 1919. Driving-arrangements for screw propellers. - Toothed gearing suitable for gearing-down turbines in marine propulsion comprises double helical or other trains connected through torsional couplings, one of which has a greater resistance than the others so as to steady the high-speed driving-pinion in its bearing. Such pinion 6, Fig. 1, is mounted on a quill shaft connected through an axially-adjustable coupling 8<a> to an engine shaft 8. Two or more countershafts carry wheels 10 meshing with the pinion 6, and pinions 19 meshing with a driven wheel 16, which may be co-axial with the pinion 6. Each countershaft is divided into parts 12. 21 connected through a yielding coupling 25. The wheels 10, 16 may be of flexible laminations. A dynamometer may be used with each coupling to indicate the power transmitted. A suitable coupling is shown in Figs. 2 and 3, A member 29 on the shaft 12 has axial teeth 32 projecting between aligned teeth 35 on a boss 30 on the shaft 21. Spaces a allow axial movement. Plates 37 run right along each side of each axial row of alternating teeth, and are pressed apart by springs 36. The springs 36 of one coupling are set under greater pressure than those of the other couplings, so that the pinion 6 is thrust steadily in one direction for going ahead, and in another direction for going astern. A suitable dynamometer is shown in Figs. 2 and 4. Yielding of the coupling causes projections 42 on the member 30 to turn bellcrank levers 47 pivoted on the member 29. This operates a ring 41 axially. A fibre disc 50 can be moved into engagement with a groove in the ring 41 by turning an eccentric 52. Axial movement of the disc 50 is passed through a spindle 51 to a spring lever 55 having a long arm 56 moving over a dial 61.
