Abstract

158,478. Harrop, A. T. April 16, 1920. Fluid-pressure.-Relates to fluid-pressure brakes of the kind in which the brake cylinder is provided with differential pistons the pressure on one of which is reduced to apply the brake, and consists in effecting the reduction in pressure by a compressor which discharges the air into a reservoir from which it is allowed to return to release the brake. In the running position shown in Fig. 2, both of the chambers 2, 8 in which the differential pistons 3, 4 work are subject to the pressure in the reservoir A so that the brakes are held off by the pressure acting on the larger piston 4. The pressure is maintained in the reservoir A by a compressor B and a valve V. As long as the pressure is at the required value, the piston V<1> of this valve is raised against the spring S as shown, so that the air is merely circulated from the reservoirs through the pipes 19, 18, the driver's valve C, pipe 20, and the compressor B. If the pressure falls by leakage, the piston V<1> of the valve V falls below the pipe 18 and the compressor then draws air from the atmosphere through ports 21 and pipe 18. To apply the brakes, the valve C is moved to connect the pipes 7, 20, whereupon the compressor draws air from the chamber 2 and compresses it into the reservoir A. When the desired application has been made, the valve C is moved to blank the port of the pipe 7 and to connect the pipes 18, 20 so that the pressure is maintained in the reservoir A and chamber 8 as in running condition. When the valve C is returned to the position shown in Fig. 2, air flows back from the reservoir A to the chamber 2 by pipes 17, 7 and the brakes are released. If the compressor or other part should fail, the brakes can be applied by venting the chamber 2 to atmosphere through the port 16 in the valve C. A non-return valve 10 is disposed in the pipe 9 leading to the chamber 8.
