Description

(54) SACKS OR BAGS (71) We, DRG (UK) LIMITBD, of 1, Redcliffe Street, Bristol BS99 7QY, a British company, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us and the method by which it is to bel performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to sacks or bags and is concerned, more particularly with sacks or bags made of one or more plies of paper or plastics sheet material intended for use in situations where it is required that the contents of each sack or bag be sampled at some stage before the contents are used.
One such application is in respect of pharmaceutical material where it is necessary, under current legislation, for a sample of the contents to be taken from each sack or bag as delivered. It is customary to extract the sample with the aid of an auger, but difficulties then arise with resealing of the sack or bag. Attempts have been made to seal the hole made by the auger with adhesive tape, but contamination of the external surface of the sack or bag with powdery material may inhibit a satisfactory bond between the tape and the sack or bag.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved sack or bag in which the above difficulty is alleviated.
The present invention consists in a sack or bag of one or more plies of paper or plastics sheet material, which includes a patch of flexible foam material secured by adhesive to the outside or inside of the sack or bag, or between two plies thereof, and arranged so that when an auger has been passed into the sack or bag to extract a sample of its contents, the auger also passing through the patch, the patch will effectively remseal the auger hole after the auger has been removed.
Where the patch is not visible, its location may be indicated on the outslde of the sack or bag.
The patch may be secured by adhesive to any part of the sack or bag, but on a pasted valved paper sack the preferred position is on the inside adjacent the valve, whilst on sewn valved or sewn closure sacks it is inside on one side adjacent the stitching line further facilitating sampling without necessarily removing the sacks or bags from a stack or palleb load.
The patch may be composed of any suitable foam material, such as a plastics or rubber, and should have physical characteristics suitable for achieving the effective re-sealing of the auger hole after the auger has been removed. In order to reduce the likelihood of the breaking away of particles of patch material with the possibility of contamination of the contents, when the auger is passed into the sack or bag, the patch may be provided with a slit where the auger is to be inserted.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS: 1. A sack or bag of one or more plies of paper or plastics sheet material, which includes a patch of flexible foam material secured by adhesive to the outside or inside of the sack or bag, or between two plies thereof, and arranged so that when an auger has been passed into the sack or bag to extract a sample of its contents, the auger also passing through the patch, the patch will effectively re-seal the auger hole after the auger has beer4 removed 2. A sack or bag as claimed in Claim 1, wherein an indication of the location of the patch is provided on the outside of the sack or bag.
3. A sack or bag as claimed in Claim 1 or 2, wherein the sack or bag has a valve secured by paste and the patch is located inside adjacent the valve.
4. A sack or bag as claimed in Claim 1 or 2, wherein the sack or bag has a sewn
