Description

(54) DEVICE SUITABLE FOR USE IN THE CONNECTION OF TIMBER ELEMENTS (71) We, BULLDOG AKSJESEL SKAP, a body corporate organised according to the Laws of Norway, Malerhaugveien 28, Postboks 6153, Etterstad, Oslo 6, Norway, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be Per- formed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: The present invention relates to a device suitable for use in the connection of timber elements and more particularly it relates to a device for use in making wooden constructions wherein the said device may be pressed into the individual wooden elements by the use of, for example, bolts, screws, presses or similar equipment.
A proposal has been made to use, in the connection of timber elements, a device having a central bore provided with a collar bearing against a bolt, and such devices may have teeth along the edge of a plate and in the plate itself. The teeth may be formed as approximately equilateral triangles, having an apex of 600 to 90". The form of the teeth provides a favourable pressure area combined with a good rigidity. The previously proposed deviSe may include two small holes, through which may be inserted nails for retaining the plate in position after insertion.
Although the prevously proposed device may be extremely useful in some årcum- stances, in other circumstances it may have certain drawbacks which are particularly obvious in the highly accelerated production and transport of partially assembled units for constmction purposes today. Thus, the rela tively blunt teeth of previously proposed devices will immediately following installation of the device on a body give a limited attachment. During transportation and mounting the devices may thus loosen somewhat or be completely lost.
The present invention provides a device suitable for use in the connection of timber elements, which device comprises a base plate, a plurality of teeth extending from at least one surface of the plate at right angles to the plane of the plate, and one or more claws extending from the said surface, each claw being in the form of a crooked finger and comprising a short portion extending from the plate at right angles to the plane of the plate and a tip portion which is generally arcuate.
The invention makes it possible to improve the previously proposed device in such a way that it will be better fixed after pressure insertion and will have a reduced tendency to loosen or to be lost by speedy and rough treatment and handling of parts or elements on which the device in installed.
The tip of the claw, or at least one claw, is advantageously blunt to provide for the necessary resistance to bend the claw. Preferably the claw, or at least one claw, is positioned at such an angle that rotation during insertion is avoided, the teeth of the connector forming the necessary abutment. Advantageously there are two claws out of alignment with each other. The claw, or at least one claw, is preferably integral with the plate, and advantageously the claw, or at least one claw, is of substantially constant width for substantially the whole of its length.
At least some of the teeth in the device of the invention are advantageously positioned at the periphery of the plate, and preferably at least some of the teeth have the shape of subtsantially equilaterally triangles. The teeth are advantageously integral with the plate.
An aperture, which may have a collar therearound, may be provided in the plate.
The aperture may for example be circular and in this case the claw, or at least one claw, is preferably at an angle to a line passing through the centre of the aperture and intersecting the claw, and each tooth is preferably at an angle other than a right angle to a line passing through the centre of the aperture and intersecting the tooth. The device may also comprise one or small apertures for receiving nails.
The invention also provides an essembly comprising a first body and a device according to the invention installed on a surface of the body and further provides an assembly comprising a first body and a device according to the invention, teeth and claw(s) od the device protruding into the body.
In the assembly of the invention the teeth are preferably at right angles to the plate, and at least the tip portion of the claw, or at least one claw, is not at right angles to the plane of the plate. The body advantageously has a hole therein, the device having an aperture in register with the hole; fastening means may extend through the hole and the aperture.
The assembly may also comprise a second body which abuts the device and is connected to the first body. Advantageously the first and second bodies have holes therein and the device has a aperture therein, the holes and aperture being in register and fastening means extending therethrough.
The invention also provides a method of making an assembly comprising installing a device according to the invention on a surface of a first body so that teeth and claw(s) of the device protrude into the body. Advantageously the claw is or claws are bent during their insertion onto the first body. A second body may be positioned in abutting relation.
to the device and connected to the first body.
The first body and/or the second body (if present) may comprise a timber element By the insertion with pressure of the device into timber the form of the claw will cause it to sink into the wood, being bent somewhat at the same time. It will thus grip the wood and the device will stick without further locking by means of nails or similar.
The claw(s) have been positioned at such an angle that an abutment against rotation of the device is formed by the teeth of the device. A rotation would be the cause of defective resistance to the forming of the claws during insertion.
The invention makes possible an automatic locking of the device to the timber when it is pressed into it. Locking by means of nails or similar is in modern mass production impossible or at least difficult to accomplish for technical and/or economical reasons.
One embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings which show a plan view and a section of a device according to the invention.
Referring now to the drawings, a device suitable for use in the connection of timber elements is generally designated 1. The device 1 includes a fixture plate having teeth 2 around its edge and attachment holes 3 therein. The teeth 2 have the shape of substantially equilateral triangles and are at right angles to the plate throughout their length.
The device further includes claws 4 each of which has the form of a crooked finger. Each finger comprises a short portion at right angles to the fixture plate, then the finger is bent through a small angle and finally it extends arcuate towards the tip. It can be seen from the drawings that the crooked fingers 4 have been stamped out at an angle in relation to the diameter 5 of the fixture plate.
The form of the device is in no way limited to the form of the embodiment described above.
