Description
(54) BOX TRAY SYSTEM
(71) We, INSULEX LIMITED, a British
Company of Insulex House, 124 Barlby Road, London, W10 6BX, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to a box system comprising a plurality of stackable members, and is particularly but not exclusively concerned with such a system wherein the uppermost member is a lid, and the remaining members are trays having recesses suitable for receiving and retaining food.
Trays having recesses suitable for containing food are known, and have been in use for example in canteens and hospitals, for some years. However, such trays may conveniently only be carried singly, and although when the recesses do not contain food they may generally be stacked for ease of storage, there is no provision by which several trays may be loaded with food and then conveniently assembled to form a single, readily portable food carrying unit.
According to the present invention there is provided a box system comprising a plurality of stackable members, one of said members being in the form of a lid and the remainder of said members being in the form of trays, said trays being capable of being nested together to form a stack of trays in which the bottom of each tray, other than the bottom tray of the stack, forms a cover for the tray therebeneath and said lid being capable of being nested in the uppermost tray of the stack to form a cover for said uppermost tray, each of said members being provided with a connecting portion capable of co-operation with a connecting portion of the adjacent member in the stack to form a pair of co-operating portions which maintain a connection between the adjacent members, at least one of the portions of each pair being resiliently displaceable between a first position in which it co-operates with the other of the portions of the pair and a second position in which it does not co-operate with the other of the portions of the pair, there also being provided means operable to displace each resiliently displaceable connecting portion to its second position in order to disconnect the adjacent member.
The lid is preferably provided with a handle to facilitate carrying of the box system, which handle may be for example in the form of a recess in the upper surface of the lid having a carrying member extending across the mouth of the recess.
In one preferred embodiment of the invention, each tray is provided with four
recesses, three of these preferably being generally circular in plan and the fourth preferably being generally elongate in plan and suitable for retaining cutlery. Of the three generally circular recesses, a first is preferably adapted to accommodate a drinking vessel and the other two are preferably adapted to contain food, one of said other two preferably being of larger diameter than the other. It is preferred that one or more of the so-called food recesses is bounded by a peripheral wall extending, in normal use, upwardly from the surface of the tray, and is provided with a cover to fit securely around the wall portion so as to retain food in the recess whilst the tray is being carried. Such a cover would also, of course, serve to protect hot food in the recess from heat loss by evaporation.Where one tray recess is adapted to accommodate a drinking vessel, it is preferred that the top of the vessel extends upwardly from the recess and is so shaped as to fit round the bottom of the corresponding recess of an adjacent tray when stacked. If required the recesses may be provided with removable liner to facili tate cleaning.
In a preferred embodiment of the box
system the pair of co-operating portions which maintain a connection between adjacent stacked members comprises a first connecting portion in the form of a slot in a first member, and a second connecting portion provided in the second member, which second connecting portion comprises a resiliently displaceable tongue to suit the slot. Thus on assembly of the first and second members, for example a tray and a lid, or two trays, the second connecting portion is displaced from a first or normal position to a second position as or before the first and second members are stacked, and the second portion is released.By virtue of its resilient character the second connecting portion springs back, on release, to its normal position and in doing so the tongue co-operates with, that is protrudes through, the slot, thus securing together the two members of the stack. To disassemble two stacked members of this type, the second connection portion is manually displaced from its first to its second position, thus removing the tongue from co-operation with the slot and allowing the two members to be lifted apart.
It is preferred that each member is provided with two connecting portions, each of which is remote from the other and is adapted for co-operation with the corresponding connecting portion of an adjacent member. For example each member may be of generally elliptical cross section, in which case it is preferred that each member is provided with two of said connecting portions, one being disposed substantially at a first end of the long axis of the ellipse and the other connecting portion being disposed substantially at the second (opposite) end thereof.
Preferably each tray member is provided with a first peripheral wall extending substantially normally from the tray surface in a first direction, and the lid member and each tray member is provided with a second peripheral wall extending substantially normally from the respective lid and tray surface in a second direction opposite to said first direction, the first and second walls being dimensioned such that when the members are stacked the second wall of each member nests with the first wall of an adjacent member to confer on the stacked box system a substantially flush external side wall.
In the preferred embodiment where the first connecting portion is in the form of a slot in a first member, it is then preferred that the first member is a tray and the said first co-operating portion is in the form of a slot provided in its first peripheral wall.
The members of the box system of the invention are preferably moulded from a thermoplastics material, for example a material which is heat insulting, such as polypropylene or an acrylonitrile/ butadiene/ styrene polymer. Any number of members may be stacked together to form a system of any desired size. The actual number is, of course, dependent on the ease with which the stacked system may be carried. For example the box system of the invention conveniently comprises a lid member and four tray members, although the number of tray members may be varied at will depending on the purpose of use.
Although the invention has so far been described with reference to its use as a system for transporting food trays (both emply and stocked with food), it will be understood that the system is readily adapted as a convenient method of carrying any small articles. For example the recessed trays may accommodate tools, nuts and bolts, sewing materials or other equipment for which it is advantageous to employ a method of carrying wherein any desired portion of the system may be exposed for access simply by displacing the resilient connecting portion of any pair of connected adjacent trays and separating the stacked system at any desired position.
For a better understanding of the invention and to show how the same may be carried into effect, reference will now be made, by way of example, to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows a perspective view of a lid of a box system according to the invention;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the inverted lid of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a perspective view of an inverted tray member of the box system of the invention;
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the tray of Figure 3;
Figure 5 is a perspective view of a box system according to the invention; and
Figure 6 is a perspective view of the inverted box system of Figure 5.
Figure 1 shows a stackable member in the form of an elongate elliptical lid 1, formed from polypropylene and having an upper surface 2 with a (second) peripheral wall 6 depending therefrom. The upper surface 2 is provided with a 'recess 3, across the mouth of which there is disposed a carrying handle 4. At one end of the lid 1, formed in the wall 6, is a resiliently displaceable (second) connecting portion 5 shown in its first or normal position (Although not shown, the lid is provided with a second identical connecting portion 5 at the opposite end of its long axis).
Figure 2 shows the lid of Figure 1 in an inverted position, including the wall of the recess 3 and an end of the handle 4 extending therethrough. The resilient second connecting portion 5 is provided with a lip 18 which forms a means operable manually to displace the resilient second connecting portion 5 from its normal (first) position to a second position to allow an adjacent member with which it is in co-operation to be disconnected. At the inner surface of the resiliently displaceable portion 5 is a tongue 7 for co-operating with another (first) connecting portion of an adjacent member of the box system.
Figure 3 shows an inverted view of another member of the box system in the form of a tray 8, also moulded from poly propylene and having a surface (not shown) provided with portions defining three recesses 12, 13 and 14 of a shape which is generally circular in plan, and one generally elongate recess 15. The tray 8 has a (second) peripheral wall 10 which in normal use extends downwardly substantially normally to the tray surface, which second wall extends to a distance from the tray surface which is greater than the depth of the recesses in the surface. Formed in the second wall 10 is a resiliently displaceable second connecting portion 5' having a tongue 7' for engaging a first connecting portion of an adjacent member and a lip 18' operable for manual displacement.The elements 5', 7' and 18' of the tray 8 are in fact respectively identical with the elements 5, 7 and 18 of the lid 1.
The tray 8, as may be more clearly seen from Figure 4, is provided with a first peripheral wall 11 extending substantially normally, and, in normal use, upwardly from the tray surface 19. This first wall 11 is so disposed that, when members are stacked together to form a box system according to the invention, it nests with the second wall 10 of another tray or the wall 6 of the lid so that the stacked system presents a smooth walled external appearance. The tray 8 is provided with a (first) connecting portion for co-operating with the resiliency displaceable portions 5 or 5', this being in the embodiment shown, a slot 9 formed in the first wall 11 and located so as to co-operate with the tongue 7 of an adjacent stacked member.
It is a feature of the embodiment as shown that the dimensions of the wall 10 and the depth of the recesses in the tray are such that even when the recesses contain food or other materials the contents of the recesses are not squashed when adjacent members are nested together. Thus on subsequent separation of the members each tray and its contents are intact.
Although the tray and lid shown in
Figures 1 to 4 are symmetrical in that both have a resilient displaceable (second) connecting portion at each end of their respective long axes, it will be understood that it is possible to connect adjacent stacked members which each have only one resiliently displaceable (second) connecting portion which co-operates with the (first) connecting portion of an adjacent member, provided that some other securing means, not necessarily resiliently displaceable is also provided between the two members.
For example the other securing means might comprise a slot and rigid co-operating tongue in which case adjacent members would be stacked by inserting the rigid tongue in the slot to form a hinge and thereafter engaging the first and second (resilient) connecting portions as hereinbefore described.
The recesses 12 and 14 of the embodiment shown are provided with upwardly extending peripheral walls 17 and 16 respectively. These form a means whereby a cover, for example of resilient plastics material, may be placed over the recess to cover the same.
Figures 5 and 6 show a box system according to the invention in stacked configuration comprising a lid 1 in combination with two trays 8, nested together and secured in that position by co-operation of their resiliently displaceable (second) connecting portions 5 and 5' with the respective first connecting portions (not shown). Although only two trays are shown in the box system, the actual number stacked with each lid may be varied at will.
A readily portable system comprising four trays and one lid is preferred.
WHAT' WE CLAIM IS:- 1. A box system comprising a plurality of stackable members, one of said members being in the form of a lid and the remainder of said members being in the form of trays, said trays being capable of being nested together to form a stack of trays in which the bottom of each tray, other than the bottom tray of the stack, forms a cover for the tray therebeneath and said lid being capable of being nested in the uppermost tray of the stack to form a cover for said uppermost tray, each of said members being provided with a connecting portion capable of co-operation with a connecting portion of the adjacent member in the stack to form a pair of co-operating portions which maintain a connection between the adjacent members, at least one of the portions of each pair being resiliently displaceable between a first position in which it co-operates with the other of the portions of the pair and a second position in which it does not cooperate with the other of the portions of the pair, there also being provided means operable to displace each
