Hair-curling appliances.-An electric heater for hair waving comprises a continuous coil of insulated wire wound on a. metal tube, with a multiway switch connected to one end and to one or more points in the length of the coil, so that more or less of the coil may be included in the circuit to vary the heating effect. The heating- coil a, Fig. 2, is wound on a metal tube b, and insulated by asbestos paper. The tube b is attached to the switch c by a casting having four posts e through which the leads from the coil are carried, and an aluminium sleeve f covers the coil. The switch comprises an annular body c, provided with two terminals i, i<1>, Fig. 3, to which the flexible leads j are connected, and one of which is connected to one end of the coil, while the other is in sliding contact with a metal ring l<1>, rotatable a'bout a, boss on the switch body. A radial arm l on this ring makes contact when the ring is rotated by means of the knob l<2> with either of the plates k, k<1>, k<2>, which are in connection with the intermediate points and the end respectively of the coil. The apparatus is suspended by the leads j from the device shown in Fig. 6, and is pulled down against the action of the spring p when in use. The spring may be replaced by a. weight suspended from the sheave n<1> of the pulley m. In using the heater, the hair is wound on a former, enclosed in a wrapping saturated with suitable solution, the whole being then enclosed in a cardboard tube and inserted in the tube, l of the heater, and the desired degree of heat applied.
