Description
(54) IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO SECURITY SHEET MATERIAL
(71) We, G V PLANER LIMITED, of
Windrnill Road, Sunbry-on-Thames, Middlesex, England, a British Company, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be per formed, to be particularly described in and iby the following statement: This invention relates to security sheet material.
It is an object of the invention to provide security sheet material that prevents accurate reproduction by optical and/or electronic photocopying means d a colour or black and white text and/or image applied to, for example printed or embossed on, the material.
In accordance with the present invention, there is provided security sheet material capable of receiving a text and/or an image and having therein a film of reflecting sufficient light to prevent formation of an accurate reproduction by optical and/or electronic photocopying means of the text and/or an image received by the material.
It will be appreciated that photocopying of sheet material in accordance with the in vention can still take place, but that the presence of the reflective film in the material will render a resultant copy of the text and/ or image inaccurate, at least to visual in section, since accurate reproduction of the colour, intensity or texture of the film is not possible.
Furthermore, the presence of the film can be easily ascertained visually and by instu- mental means, which may be for example electrical, magnetic or electro-optical.
The film may comprise a thin metal foil or a sublimated metal vapour and this may be protected by a coating of artificial resin. The resin has to be compatible for bonding to the film and to the material, in addition to being sufficiently .transparent so as appreciably not to reduce the reflectivity of the film.
The sheet material can be used for docu menus such as postage stamps, banknotes, cheques, credit and identity cards and other security documents, whether prepared in part or in wloole by printing, transfer, drawing or painting, for example. Aocord- dngly, the sheet material may comprise paper, card or plastics material.
The sheet material may be pure or coloured, or may be a mixture of both.
It will be appreciated that the affinity between the sheet material and the film should be such that there is no dislocation during handling, for example as by scraping, folding or crumpling. This affinity may be enhanced by coating the sheet material with an acrylic-type resin when, for example, acrylates are used in the sizing of the sheet material.
The film may be incorporated into the sheet material using techniques known in the manufacture of security paper. For example a vacuum or electrostatic deposition technique may be employed.
WHAT WE CLAIM B:- Il, Security material capable of receiving a text and/or an image and having therein a film capable of reflecting sufficient light to prevent formation of an accurate reproduction by optical and/or electronic photocopying means of the text and/or an image received by the material.
2. Security sheet material according to claim 1, wherein the film comprises a thin metal foil or a sublimated metal vapour.
3. Security sheet material according to claim 2, wherein the film is coated with artificial resin.
4 Security sheet material according to any preceding claim, wherein the material comprises paper, card or plastics material.
