Abstract

Hides are tanned with the heavy metal salts (other than aluminium or chromium salts) of synthetic tanning-agents of the kinds described in Specification 156,254. According to examples there are employed products obtained as follows:-Tar phenols of boiling-point 185-200 DEG C. are heated with sodium sulphite and formaldehyde solution, the product is acidified with sulphuric acid and the sulphur dioxide boiled off, and the product finally neutralized with ceric hydroxide; a mixture of naphthalene and phenol is sulphonated and condensed with formaldehyde solution, and the product is neutralized with potash and ceric hydroxide. The products may be used alone or mixed with other tanning-agents.ALSO:Hides are tanned with the heavy metal salts (other than aluminium or chromium salts) of synthetic tanning-agents of the kinds described in Specification 156,254.
