Description

(54) DEVICE FOR ADJUSTABLY LOCKING A MOVABLE PART RELATIVE TO A FIXED STRUCTUURE (71) I, WILLY MEYS, a Belgian subject, of Braine-1'Alleud,-Belgium-22 rue du Vignoble, do hereby declare the invention, for which I pray that a patent may be granted to me and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to a device for adjustably locking a movable part relative to a fixed structure, for example for retaining a flap in a conveying-band installation, by clamping said flap between an angle-iron or similar and the fixed structure of the installation.
The invention relates more particularly to the locking of a holding flap in a conveying-band installation which allows to clamp the flap edge against elements which are part of the fixed structure of an installation of this kind. There are various devices which allow an adjustable clamping of this flap by making use of clamping levers which abut retaining elements such as nuts the position of which is adjustable along a screw-threaded shaft. Such an arrangement requires the loosening of the nuts, the removal of the lever and a putting-back in rotating position. Said operations are timeconsuming and have sometimes to be done again if it is desired to reach an accurate adjustment or fitting.
The invention has for purpose to obviate the drawbacks of the known devices and to provide a device which allows a speedy clamping and unclamping of a part causing the locking under an adjustable pressure of a holding flap in a conveying-band installation.
The invention provides a device for adjustably locking a movable part relative to a fixed structure, for example for retaining a flap in a conveying-band installation, by clamping said flap between an angle-iron or other clamping member and the fixed structure of the installation, which device comprises a lever the cam-like end of which is rotatably mounted about a shaft which is in turn mounted on a screw-threaded shaft which, in use, co-operates with a screwthreaded bush secured to the installation structure, a bell-crank-like part for location between said structure and the cam-like end of said lever to bear, in use, with one end on the structure and with the other end on said angle-iron or other clamping member for clamping said flap, as aforesaid, with such a general arrangement that in use rotation of the lever in one direction causes said bell-crank to bear firmly against the structure and the angle-iron or other clamping member to effect clamping of the flap, while rotation of said screw-threaded shaft permits adjustment of the spacing between the geometrical axis of said first-mentioned shaft and the surface of the installation structure against which the flap is to be clamped.
In an advantageous embodiment, said bell-crank-like part may be of channel section with said screw-threaded shaft passing freely through an aperture in the bottom of the channel section of such part.
In the same embodiment, said bell-cranklike part may have a cut-out on its inside which cut-out is adapted to receive the apex part of an angle-iron for clamping said flap.
Other details and features of the invention will stand out from the description given below by way of non limitative example and with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which: Figure ] is a side view partly in crosssection of the device according to the invention.
Figure 2 is a cross-section along line II- II in Figure 1.
The device as shown in the drawing is mounted on an element from a fixed structure against which is clamped a part 2 from flexible material, a so-called flap. Said flap comprises a holding member which is used in a conveying-band installation. It is of importance to have means which are easy to use for retaining said flap applied against the installation structure which is shown here by part 1.
To said part 1 is fastened preferably by soldering, a screw-threaded bush with which co-operates a screw-threaded shaft 4 the free end of which bears a swinging shaft 5 to which is hinged a lever 6 the cam-like head 61 of which bears on the surface 7 of a bellcrank-like part 8. Said part 8 has an opening 9 to let the screw-threaded shaft 4 through and two cut-outs 10 provided in the side sur Eaces thereof. Said cut-outs retain a section 11 which holds the flap 2 pressed against the structure 1 when a high enough pressure is brought to bear by the cam-like head 61 of lever 6, on part 8.
To the contrary of the known locking devices, the adjustment of the pressure which is effectively exerted on part 8 by lever 6 can be made immediately without requiring the unscrewing or positioning of additional members. Indeed when the lever 6 has been raised in the direction as shown by arrow 12 in Figure 1, the cam-like head 61 no more exerting a pressure on part 8, it is possible to rotate said lever 6 about the geometrical axis of screw-threaded shaft 4.
This means screwing said shaft 4 out of screw-threaded bush 3 or to the contrary screwing same down said bush 3, depending on the rotation direction of screw-threaded shaft 4. The spacing between the geometrical axis of swinging shaft 5 and the surface 7 of the bell-crank-like part 8 can thus be changed without requiring the disassembling of any part whatsoever.
The user which presses or tries to press down the lever 6 is directly aware of the excess or lack of pressure as exerted by the cam-like head 61 and he can directly correct the pressure rate by moving closer or away the rotation axis of part 8. Moreover it is also possible to lock the lever 6 in planes which are not in parallel relationship with the general plane of the bell-crank-like part 8.
The above description makes quite clear the high simplicity of the device according to the invention and the ease with which the required pressure can both be exerted or changed.
The possibility of locking the lever 6 with the cam-like head 61 at various angles relative to the direction along which extends part 8, is clear when taking into consideration that the screw-thread of parts 3 and 4 is low-pitched. Said feature is very advantageous, in view of the smallness or the difficulty of access which is usual in the structures to which the invention relates.
It must be understood that the invention is in no way limited to the above embodiments and that many changes can be brought therein without departing from the scope of the invention as defined by the appended
