Description

(54) A DOWEL (71) We, JULIUS BLUM GESELL SCHAFT MBH, of Im Startle 498, 6973 Hochst, Austria, an Austrian Company, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to use, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: The invention relates to a dowel, in particular for furniture fittings, having an at least approximately cylindrical dowel body which is provided on its outer surface with ribs or the like.
Such dowels are known and are used for many purposes in the furniture industry for fixing fittings, such as hinges, furniture connectors and the like.
On the one hand, a good connection or adhesion of the dowel in the article of furniture and on the other hand a good connection with or a good seat of the dowel on the fitting or a pin of the fitting is a condition for a good and secure anchorage of the respective part of the fitting.
It is an object of the invention to provide a dowel which can be easily anchored on the one hand on the support stub of the furniture fitting or the base plate of the furniture fitting, and which furthermore ensures a particularly good expansion of the dowel in the furniture component.
This is attained according to the invention in that the dowel body is constructed in two parts, the separating planes extending radially and in the axial direction of the dowel body to give dowel parts which are at least approximately cylindrical sectors, one of the sectors being of greater arc than the other.
A further constructional example provides that the dowel members are of unequal height.
In order to attain a particularly good anchorage of the dowel member on a dowel support stub, the dowel fitting assembly according to the invention has a dowel support stub which is provided with at least one radial projection, preferably with two radial projections. Furthermore the dowel sector of smaller arc preferably comprises a depression on the inner surface.
The radial projections of the dowel support stub are offset in the longitudinal direction of the dowel support stub, so that one projection engages from below under one dowel member, whereas the second projection extends into the depression of the second dowel member.
Furthermore it is provided that the dowel sector of smaller arc preferably comprises an edge projection; the height of the edge projection is equal to the difference in height of the dowel members.
A further constructional example of the invention provides that at least one dowel member comprises a bevel at the upper inner edge.
In order that the dowel according to the invention or the dowel members according to the invention may be handled more easily prior to assembly, it is provided that the two dowel members are held together by one or more thin connecting films.
One constructional example of the invention is described below with reference to the Figures of the accompanying drawing.
Figure 1 illustrates a view from above of a dowel according to the invention, Figure 2 illustrates a section on the line I I of Figure 1, the two dowel members being drawn apart.
Figure 3 illustrates a view from above of an assembly plate with a dowel support stub, Figure 4 illustrates a side view of an assembly plate with a dowel support stub, Figure 5 illustrates a section through a dowel support stub and a dowel according to the invention during an assembly step, and Figure 6 illustrates a section through a dowel support stub and a dowel according to the invention with the dowel mounted and the dowel support stub mounted.
As may be seen in particular from Figures 1 and 2, the dowel 1 is constructed in two parts, namely consisting of a hollow cylinder 2 cut open and a dowel sector 3 of smaller arc.
The dowel according to the invention is provided with ribs 4 on its outer surface in a known manner and fashion.
A synthetic resin is preferably selected as material for the dowel.
The dowel support stub 5 which may be formed on a known mounting plate 6 comprises at its lower end a radial projection 7, and towards the upper end a radial projection 8, the lower radial projection 7 being constructed as a circular ringe although not as a continuous circular ring.
For assembly the part 2, constructed as a cut out hollow cylinder, of the dowel 1 is then pushed laterally on the dowel support stub 5, clampingly embracing the dowel support stub 5 and sitting on the radial projection 7.
The radial projection 8 is free in this case.
The dowel sector 3 is then inserted in a bore 9 of the furniture portion 10, namelv in such a manner that it is located below the cut out region of the part 2 of the dowel.
Thereupon the dowel support stub 5 with the dowel part 2 mounted thereon is pushed into the bore 9.
Pushing in is facilitated by a bevel 11 on the dowel sector 3.
In the pushed-in state of the dowel support stub 5 or the whole mounting plate 6 the radial projection 8 protrudes into the depression 12 of the dowel sector 3. The dowel support stub 5 and thus the mounting plate 6 is secured thereby against falling out or being pulled out.
In order to facilitate handling the dowel 1 according to the invention prior to assembly or in order to prevent individual members from being lost. it is provided in the constructional example that the dowel sector 3 is connected to the dowel member 2 by means of thin connector films 13, the thin connector films 13 being so dimensioned that they tear off easily.
As may be seen in particular from Figure 6, the dowel sector 3 is higher than the member 2 constructed as a cut out hollow cylinder.
The dowel sector comprises a radial edge projection 14 the height of which is equal to the difference in height between the dowel sector 3 and the dowel member 2 and which overlaps the edge of the bore.
In the constructional example the mounting plate 6 is of stepped construction in the region of the base of the dowel support stub 5.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS: 1. A dowel, in particular for furniture fittings. with a tubular dowel body which is provided on its outer surface with ribs or the like, the dowel body being constructed in two parts. with planes of separation extending radially and in the axial direction of the dowel body such that the two dowel parts are at least appoximately cylindrical sectors with one being of greater arc than the other.
