Description
(54) IMPROVEMENTS IN AND RELATING TO
ELECTRIC MOTORS
(71) We, THE METTOY COMPANY
LIMITED, a British company of 14 Harlestone
Road, Northampton NN5 7AF do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed to be particularly described in and by the following statement:- The present invention relates to improvements in and relating to electric motors and more particularly to an improvement in or modification of the electric motor disclosed in our Patent No. 1,434,192.
Our Patent No. 1,434,192 claims an electric motor comprising a rotor including a ring formed of magnetic material bonded by a plastic material and permanently magnetised to provide a number of magnetic poles of alternately opposite polarity, -a stator comprising two plates of magnetic material containing therebetween a coil, each plate having one edge provided with fingers forming stator pole faces, the fingers of the plates being angularly displaced whereby, when the coil is energised, stator poles of alternately opposite polarity are produced which cooperate with the magnetic poles of the rotor to drive the rotor, means arranged to respond to the poles of the rotor during rotation to derive an electrical signal which varies in accordance with the position of the rotor, and means responsive to said signal for controlling energisation of said coil and hence the rotation of the rotor.
In particular, there is disclosed a single stator winding energised from a centretapped power source and also, a centretapped stator winding is disclosed. While these arrangements have advantages in certain circumstances, we have found that an alternative stator construction could also be used.
The present invention provides an electric motor according to any one of claims 1 to 7 and 9 of Patent No. 1,434,192 wherein the coil is formed by two windings, each arranged to be alternately connected across a power supply.
In order that the present invention be more readily understood, an embodiment thereof will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing which shows a circuit diagram of an electric motor.
The drawing is identical to Figure 5 of
Patent 1,434,192 up to the collectors of the drive transistors Tr8, Tr9 and so no description of the operation of the circuit will be given here. The modification which has been made is that the collector of the transistor Tr8 is connected to one end of a winding W1 the other end of which is connected to earth. Further, the collector of Tr8 is connected to resistor Roll.
The collector of Tr9 is connected to one end of a further winding W2 the other end of which is connected to the positive terminal of a power supply.
When the transistor Tr8 is conductive, current flows through the winding W1 and when the transistor Tr9 is conductive current flows through winding W2. The windings are wound and disposed on a former (not shown) in such a way that current flow through winding W1 is in the opposite direction to current flow through the winding W2 so that alternating magnetic poles are produced at the ends of the former.
If necessary, a resistance can be connected in series with one or both of the windings.
The above arrangement has the advantage that neither a centre-tapped power supply nor a centre-tapped stator coil is required.
In other respects, the motor construction is identical to the constructions disclosed in our Patent 1,434,192.
Claims (4)
