Abstract

The roller (10) has a metal sleeve (12) mounted on a shaft (11) by means of a rolling bearing. The sleeve (12) is surrounded by an inner tube (14) and an outer tube (15) which both consist of elastomeric material and which are connected to one another by vulcanisation. The material of the inner tube (14) consists of an elastomeric matrix, into which very short fibres oriented circumferentially and preferably consisting of cellulose are embedded. Consequently, in comparison with the outer tube (15) which consists of the hitherto conventionally used material, such as rubber or caoutchouc, if appropriate with suitable additives, the material of the inner tube (14) has a substantially steeper stress/strain curve than the elastomeric material of the outer tube (15). The roller (10) thereby withstands very much higher contact pressures, without the elastomeric material (14, 15) coming loose from the sleeve (12). <IMAGE>
