Abstract

Valve-gear.-A beat valve 1 is actuated in both directions by a pair of cams 6, 7 coaxial with the stem, engaging rollers 5 on the ends of a cross-bar 4, which opens the valve by engaging the shoulder 8, and closes it by compressing the spring 2. In the form shown, the two cams are rotated in opposite directions from a single countershaft through bevel and spur gearing, but in a modification the two cams are mounted on a single sleeve and rotate together. The cams have inclined faces and run on ball-bearings, and the cam-bowls run onball and roller bearings as shown. The cams for adjacent valves are driven one from another either directly or through intermediate gears. In the modification in which the two cams rotate. together, the cross-bar actuates two or more valves simultaneously, and a leaf spring is used in place of two springs such as 2. In another modification, a leaf spring is used with a single valve, the cross-bar wording over two guiding-spindles.
