Abstract
In this method, echo detection is used to determine the position of fractures in optical fibres (7). A pulse generator (1) delivers two pulse trains via its two outputs. The first train triggers the supply of a laser (3), while the second pulse train, which is transmitted with an adjustable delay with respect to the first pulse train, distributes output signals from a photodetector (10) onto "distance ranges", in order to be able to determine the position of the fracture. <IMAGE>
