Abstract
1534354 External combustion engine; reciprocating compressors DE JOHNSON 10 March 1976 [14 March 1975] 09507/76 Headings F1N and F1S [Also in Division F2] An external combustion engine comprises an external combustion chamber 124 and at least one piston 82 and cylinder 80 effective both to be driven by the combustion products as a power piston and to act to compress air at various stages in the engine cycle. The air inlet and outlet valves 94, 96 to the cylinder are pressure actuated, and the combustion gas inlet and exhaust valves 130, 134 are operated by cams 152, 162 via push-rods 146, 156, the push-rods having cam followers 150, 160 at their ends which are hydraulically connected to the rods so that on relieving the hydraulic pressure, movement of the followers is not transmitted to the push-rods, and the valves are inactivated while the pistons act to compress air e.g. during engine braking or during some stroke of the piston in a normal operating cycle. The compressed air is fed to a surge tank 98 and via a valve 100 either to a reservoir 110 during regenerative engine braking or to an exhaust-gas-heated combustion air pre-heater 106 prior to combustion in the external chamber 124.
