Abstract

1533989 Resilient polyurethane foams DUNLOP Ltd 11 Aug 1976 [17 Sept 1975] 38160/75 Heading C3R Resilient polyurethane foams can be made without the necessity of crushing or other mechanical treatment of the finished foam, from a foam forming reaction mixture, including a polymeric polyol Mol. Wt. >3000 and an organic polyisocyanate, which contains a colloidal silica having a mean ultimate particle size of 200 mÁ. or less. The colloidal silica may be used in an amount of from 0À1 to 7% by weight of the polyol and may be predispersed in the polyol in an amount of 10% or less by weight of the polyol. Suitable polyols are ethylene oxide tipped poly(oxypropylene)polyols. In a typical example a mixture of a poly- (oxypropylene)triol Mol. Wt. 5000; colloidal silica of particle size 12 mÁ.; a mixed amine/ tin catalyst; water; a silicone surfactant and a mixture of toluene diisocyanate and crude diphenylmethane-4,4<SP>1</SP>-diisocyanate was allowed to foam in a closed mould to produce an open celled foam showing little shrinkage. Crosslinking agents, e.g. ethylene diamine adducts and flame retardants, e.g. tris-(2,3-dibromopropyl)phosphate may be added to the foam forming reaction mixtures.
