Abstract
1533796 Artificial leg with polycentric knee joint CHAS A BLATCHFORD & SONS Ltd 20 Oct 1977 [22 July 1976] 30622/76 Heading A5R An artificial leg comprises a polycentric joint knee mechanism formed of a multipivot linkage whose instantaneous centre of rotation at full extension of the leg, i.e. the initial instantaneous centre of rotation, is adjustable in height and lies above the knee centre i.e. the notional stationary centre of rotation about which the leg can be demonstrated to have flexed, at the end of 90‹ of flexion from the fully extended position. The knee mechanism may comprise a 6- bar linkage or, as shown, a 4-bar linkage 1-4 whose initial instantaneous centre of rotation C 0 , Fig. 6, can be varied by altering the length or position of at least one of the links, e.g. by providing a rotatable eccentric pivot. Alternatively it can be varied by an adjustable extension stop which limits the mechanism movement. Such extension stop may be incorporated in a known swing phase coupling 6. The instantaneous centre of rotation is located at the intersection of the projections of links 2, 4.
