Abstract

1533417 Loop dyeing of yarns; pile fabrics; warping I L THATCHER 8 Dec 1976 [24 Oct 1975] 43690/75 Headings DIE D1K and DIL Yarns for the manufacture of pile fabrics are space dyed after having been looped into individual pockets 14, one loop for each pocket 14, by individually dyeing the loops by individual portions of dyestuff. The pockets 14, e.g. of square section, are provided in circumferential rows on the periphery of an intermittently rotatable drum 10. The yarns are looped into the pockets 14 by reciprocable needles 26 of a yarn inserting bank 24. Dye liquor is applied to the pockets 14 by units 18 each comprising individual heads arranged axially of the drum 10. Each unit 18 dispenses only dye of a single colour and the units 18 are under the control of a patterning mechanism so that, upon receipt of a signal, each unit 18 is lowered so that a charging nozzle 20 thereof extends into the pocket 14 therebeneath to dispense dye therein. The drum may be heated internally to expedite the dyeing of the loops or the dye may be fixed by heat, e.g. steam, after withdrawal of the loops from the pockets. The yarns are subsequently used for forming the pile of a pile fabric, e.g. by tufting or weaving and may be straightened out and beamed before use. Alternatively, the yarns are looped by being tufted through a backing fabric into the pockets. In the latter case, the dye dispensing heads are inside the drum and a backing fabric overlies the outside of the drum so that the loops are formed through the backing and cut from the opposite side of each pocket. In modifications, the pockets may be defined by circular section holes in the drum periphery or by two opposite and helical sets of plates to form diamond-shape holes, or the pockets may be formed in an endless belt or a chain structure.
