Abstract
1533309 Continuous heat treatment furnaces THERMO ELECTRON CORP 6 Dec 1976 50788/76 Heading F4B Flat metal stock 15, in the form of strips, slabs or sheets, is heated in a continuous heat treatment furnace 10 both by radiation from a series of perforated refractory plates 26 and by direct impingement of jets of combustion products issuing from the openings 28 in said plates 26. The plates 26, which serve to separate the heat treatment chamber 17 of the furnace from a plurality of combustion chambers 22 positioned thereabove, are arranged in a common plane which is parallel to but spaced from the confronting flat surface of the metal stack 15 to be heated. The openings 28 in each plate are uniformly distributed, and each combustion chamber 22 has an associated burner 24 which is supplied with combustion air via an inlet pipe 30 and fuel via a pipe 28. The pipes 28 and 30 are connected to respective common manifolds 32, 34, with air manifold 34 being connected to a blower 36. The operating conditions are such as to ensure that complete combustion takes place within the chambers 22. The combustion products after impingement with the metal stock 15 in chamber 17 are exhausted therefrom through flues 38. Preferably the ratio of l/d is within the range of 10 to 15, where I = diameter of an individual opening in the plates 26 and d is the distance of the plates 26 from the confronting surface of the metal stock 15 being heated. The stock 15 is supported on rollers 20.
