Abstract

1532888 Formose-modified aminoplast resins IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 27 May 1977 [28 June 1976] 26796/76 Heading C3R An amino resin composition contains unreacted or partially reacted formose. The formose is prepared by heating formaldehyde or paraformaldehyde in aqueous alkaline solution, preferably ipo Ca(OH) 2 , and is then blended with an amino resin or its precursors. Preferably the composition contains 40-80 wt. per cent of solids, of which 5-50 wt. per cent are formose and 95-50 wt. per cent are resin, and the ratio of formaldehyde to amino groups in the resin components is 0À6-1À5 : 1. In examples UF resins of U : F ratio 1 : 2 or 1À75 or 1À55 are refluxed with formose solutions of 37, 40 or 50 wt. per cent solids content, at pH 7 then about 5, to give compositions in which 22, 20, 10 or 30 wt. per cent of the solids are formose, then the product is concentrated to 68-72 wt. per cent solids. Uses.-Adhesive, casting, intumescent coating and paperboard- and textile-treating compositions.
