Abstract
1532076 Reinforced composite filaments A RUDIN & H L KREIN 5 Oct 1976 41383/76 Heading B5B A continuous sheath-core article especially a filament consists of a core comprising a mixture of a polymer and at least 1% by wt. of the core polymer of a fibrous reinforcing material and a continuous sheath surrounding the core consisting of an unreinforced polymer, the core and sheath being stretch orientated longitudinally of the filament, and the fibrous reinforcing material being oriented longitudinally of the core. Suitable core and sheath polymers are polyolefines, and polyesters and fibrous reinforcements are fibres of glass, carbon, asbestos, alpha-alumina, beryllium oxide, graphite, silicon carbide or steel of nominal diameter 0À0005 inches and length #-¢ inch. A tension modulus 10 Î 10<SP>6</SP> lbs./sq. in. and density of 2À56 gm./cc. The filaments are extruded through a die 10 having a first orifice 12 for feeding molten fibrefilled core and a second orifice 14 for feeding molten sheath material, the orifice 12 communicating with the upstream end of an axial extrusion channel 16 terminating in an extrusion orifice 18. Orifice 14 communicates through a feed channel 20 with an annular cavity 22 coaxial with channel 16 and a radial feed channel 24 is provided between cavity 22 and channel 16 for feeding molten sheath material to channel 16.
