Abstract
1531491 Seals BRITISH STEEL CORP 8 Sept 1976 [8 Sept 1975] 36876/75 Heading F2B A method of making a ceramic seal 13, for fitting between the end 12 of a ceramic refractory or silicone carbide tube and a ceramic end wall 10 of a recuperator, comprises spirally wrapping a ceramic fibre blanket 20 around a collapsible mandrel 24, radially compressing it to a diameter less than that of the opening in the wall 10, and applying to it, e,g. by impregnation before, during or after winding, a heat fugitive substance such as resin, which holds the blanket compressed to permit installation, but which degrades or evaporates when subject to service heat to allow the blanket to expand and produce a gas-tight seal. The seal 13 is held in the wall by a bayonet ring 14 with interposed ceramic washers 17, 18. In Fig. 3 the ceramic blanket 20 is spirally wound on a combustible former 21, along with an interposed resin-impregnated film 22 which produces the radial compression and is allowed to cure to maintain the compression before the coil is removed from the mandrel. In Fig. 4 (not shown), the blanket is separately wound and compressed as a whole by an external tensioned plastics film. In Fig. 5 (not shown), a resin-impregnated blanket is passed between and compressed by pinch rolls (25) on its way to winding. In Fig. 6 (not shown), a thick ceramic blanket, previously impregnated and cut to length, is wound into a single layer coil. In Figs. 8 and 9 (not shown), only the first layer of a multi-wrap blanket is impregnated, and, after winding, compression is produced by three circumferentially spaced arcuate impregnated wraps anchored on fixed posts (30). The overlaps are resin treated and the surplus cut off.
