Abstract

1530985 Cross-linked sulphonated styrene polymers NATIONAL STARCH & CHEMICAL CORP 27 May 1977 [10 June 1976] 22518/77 Heading C3P Polymers of M.W. 800-4,000,000 containing at least 5 wt. per cent styrene are simultaneously cross-linked and sulphonated by treatment in solution at 5-25‹ C. with a sulphonating agent and an aromatic cross-linking agent of defined type containing at least 2 -CH 2 X groups, where X is OH, Cl or Br. In examples, polystyrene and copolymers of styrene with isobutylene, p-t-butyl styrene, acrylonitrile, methyl methacrylate or maleic anhydride are treated in 1,2-dichloroethane solution with chlorosulphonic acid, SO 3 or a complex of SO 3 with triethyl phosphate or bis-2-chloroethyl ether, and with a cross-linking agent selected from α,α<SP>1</SP>-dichloro- (or dihydroxy-)p-xylene, 1,4 - bischloromethyl durene, 4,4<SP>1</SP>- bischloromethyl - diphenyl ethane or methane, 2,4,6- tris(chloromethyl)mesitylene, 1,4-bis(α-chlorop - tolyl) ether, and o,o<SP>1</SP> - bis(bromomethyl)- biphenyl.
