Abstract

1530305 Blow moulding oriented articles CARNAUD TOTAL INTERPLASTIC 3 Dec 1975 [4 Dec 1974] 49649/75 Heading B5A An oriented hollow body of a polyester is blow moulded from an amorphous preform at a temperature from 0-30‹ C. above the glass transition temperature. The preform itself is blow moulded from a hot extruded or injected parison in a cold mould. The blow moulded body may be cooled to solidify it and then heated, perhaps by a hot liquid to be packaged in the body, to stress-relieve it. It is preferred for the preform to have a detachable section by which it can be held during the blowing and for even the neck portion of the blown article to be oriented. In the embodiment of Fig. 1 blown preforms 3, rendered amorphous by rapid cooling, are formed in a device 2 from a parison extruded by extruder 1. The parisons are fed to a store 6 and are thence passed through a heating oven 7 on a conveyer 8 which has facility for rotating the preforms. The heated preforms are fed to a blow mould and blown into bottles 11, 13. Each preform 5 comprises a body section D1, a so-called "false-collar" D2, and a so-called "drop" D3 which is severed from the preform by a blade 4 before storage. The blow mould 14 includes a section 19 accommodating the false collar, a neck forming section 18, separated by a knife edge 20 from the section 19 and in which the upper part of the section D1 of the preform is expanded, and a body forming section. Prior to blowing through a conduit 17 in a supporting mandrel, the preform is stretched by a section 16 of the mandrel. The false collar is subsequently severed from the blown container.
