Abstract
1530126 Power plant; gas engines A J OXLEY 22 Dec 1975 [23 Dec 1974] 55493/74 Headings F1Q and F1S When a power plant is producing excess electrical power beyond the demand, the excess power is employed to drive an air liquefier 19 e.g. a Sterling refrigerator, the liquid N 2 and O 2 then being stored for driving an engine 27 e.g. a Stirling engine during peak demand to produce extra electrical power. Liquid nitrogen is supplied to the cold end of the Stirling engine whereas the hot end is heated by exhaust gases from a furnace/boiler 14, 17 which produces steam to drive the primary power generating turbine 12 or by the steam exhaust from the turbine 12. Liquid O 2 may also be used to cool the Stirling engine via a heat pipe 31, or to precool the air feed to the refrigerator, or to enrich the combustion air for the furnace 17. Instead of, or in addition to driving the Stirling engine, liquid nitrogen may be vapourized by ambient air or by heat exchange with water from a condenser 45 and expanded through a turbine or a reciprocating piston engine (not shown).
