Abstract

1530022 Producing aqueous polymer dispersions BASF AG 23 Feb 1976 [24 Feb 1975] 06985/76 Addition to 1530021 Headings C3L and C3R Aqueous dispersions having a solids content of 20-80 wt. per cent, and which are free from dispersing agents, are produced by (a) preparing an organic solvent solution of a polymeric binder containing carboxyl groups and having an acid number of 5-150, the solvent being a waterimmiscible organic solvent or a mixture of water-miscible and water-immiscible organic solvents, (b) neutralizing 1-100% of the carboxyl groups with ammonia or an amine, (c) dispersing in the solution from 10 to 150 wt. per cent, based on the binder, of one or more pigments of fillers, (d) dispersing the organic solution in water (which may contain the neutralizing agent), and (e) removing the organic solvent virtually completely by azeotropic distillation. A cross-linking agent for the binder may also be present. The product contains less than 5 wt. per cent of low molecular weight organic compounds, including solvents, although small amounts may be present, e.g. as in Example 2 where ethylene glycol monobutyl ether is added as a flow-control agent. In Examples, (1) TiO 2 is added to a solution in xylene of a methyl methacrylate/butyl acrylate/hydroxypropyl acrylate/styrene/acrylic acid, which is then mixed with water and diethanolamine, and a xylene/water azeotrope distilled off, the product being mixed with a melamine-formaldehyde resin for use as a coating; and (2) TiO 2 , porcelain and etherified N-methyloldiacetylene. urea are added to a solution in xylene as in (2), which is then mixed with dimethylethanolamine in water, and a xylene/water azeotrope distilled off.
