Abstract

1529193 Dialkanolamines SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 22 Oct 1975 [24 Oct 1974] 43353/75 Heading C2C A continuous process for preparing dialkanolamines comprises continuously contacting an olefin oxide with ammonia in a first reaction zone, continuously recovering monoalkanolamine from the effluent from said first zone, and continuously reacting the recovered monoalkanolamine with an olefin oxide in a second reaction zone, the reaction conditions in said zones being such that the amount of monoalkanolamine produced in said first reaction zone is substantially equal to the amount of monoalkanolamine converted in said second reaction zone. (a) Preferably the process comprises contacting a C 2-4 olefin oxide and excess aqueous ammonia in the first reaction zone; (b) removing the ammonia and water from the resulting first reactor effluent in an ammonia-water removal zone, thereby producing an aqueous ammonia overhead which is recycled to the first reaction zone and an ammonia-free bottoms stream; (c) separating the ammonia-free stream from the ammonia-water removal zone in a monoalkanolamine separation zone to produce a monoalkanoalamine-rich overhead stream and a dialkanolamine-rich bottoms stream; and (d) contacting the monoalkanolamine-rich overhead stream from the monoalkanolamine separation zone with a C 1-4 olefin oxide in a second reaction zone to convert said monoalkanolamine to dialkanolamine. Preferably the reactor effluent from said second reaction zone is combined with the ammonia-free bottoms stream from the ammonia-water removal zone and the combined stream is routed to the monoalkanolamine removal zone.
