Abstract

1528906 Prosthetic joints NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 9 Oct 1975 [11 Oct 1974] 44089/74 Heading A5R A prosthetic elbow joint comprises an axially bored humeral component 10 having a first portion 13 providing a bearing surface which is concave in the axial direction and convex in the circumferential direction and a second portion 14 providing a bearing surface which is convex in both the axial and the circumferential directions, and an ulnar component 30 providing a bearing surface which is convex in the axial direction and concave in the circumferential direction and has a curvature in the axial direction equal to or, preferably, less than that of the concave surface of the first portion of the humeral component so that the two components can fit together in mutual articulatory engagement. The second portion 14 of the humeral component may articulate with the natural head of the radius 70 or with a radial component 40 providing a fourth bearing surface which can be concavely dished to be complementary with the second bearing surface. The humeral component may be of integral construction or the first and second portions may be separably connected in axially adjustable manner.
