Abstract

1528133 Preparation of block copolyesters TEIJIN Ltd 30 Sept 1975 [30 Sept 1974 30 Oct 1974 11 Oct 1974 (2) 14 March 1975 27 March 1975 1 Sept 1975] 39946/75 Heading C3R A block copolyester elastomer having a softening point of at least 120‹ C. is prepared by reacting, in the molten state, (i) an aromatic polyester derived mainly from terephthalic acid and tetramethylene glycol or trimethylene glycol and having a reduced viscosity of at least 0À4 and (ii) an aliphatic polyester derived mainly from an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid or an aliphatic hydroxycarboxylic acid and a C 2-10 aliphatic glycol and having a reduced viscosity of at least 0À4, the weight ratio of (i) to (ii) being from 20 : 80 to 90 : 10, the reaction being carried out in the presence of a titanium catalyst until a polymer is obtained which has an elastic recovery of at least 50%. The polyesters may also contain limits derived from a poly(alkylene oxide)glycol or a branching agent, e.g. pentaerythritol, trimethylolpropane or trimethyl trimellitate. The reaction between the polyesters may be stopped or inhibited by the addition of a phosphorus compound, e.g. phosphorus acid or phosphoric acid or by reacting a diaryl dicarboxylate, e.g. diphenyl terephthalate, a carbonic ester, e.g. diphenyl carbonate, or an orthocarbonate, e.g. tetraphenyl orthocarbonate. The block copolyester may be subjected to solid phase polymerization. Many Examples are given, e.g. reacting polytetramethylene terephthalate with polyethylene adipate or poly-ecaprolactone.
