Abstract

1526457 Weighbridges STRAINSTALL Ltd 17 May 1977 [20 May 1976] 20789/76 Headings G1N and G1W A weighbridge for measuring the axle load of a road vehicle comprises a platform 1, 2 supported through at least one member 5 arranged on axis X, this member being subjected to torsional stress as the vehicle wheels roll on and off the platform in direction A or B. A part subject to other mechanical stress (conveniently direct shear stress on member 5) is monitored by strain-gauges to give an indication of axle load, preferably when the torsional stress passes through zero. The member 5 may comprise a cylindrical tube Figs. 2, 3 (not shown) or an I-section beam 6, Fig. 6, in which strain gauges E 1 , F 1 and corresponding gauges on the lower flange sense the torsional strains and gauges A 1 , B 1 on the web sense the shear strains to give a measure of the axle load.
